Mammals is the translation of the french word "mammifere"
and "mammifere" derives from the french word "mamelle" which means " breast ". So, any living creature that breastfeeds its babies is a mammal (this includes whales and people).

because we have the essential characteristics of mammals that distinguish us from reptiles or amphibians or insects. Mainly the fact that we are amniotes, meaning with an amniotic egg with membranes that protect the embryo, with hair with mammary glands that produce milk.
Humans are eutherians, which are placental mammals, as opposed to marsupials like kangaroos, opossums, koalas, etc.

We have mammary glands(even though rudimentary in males and undeveloped females) that provide milk for our young.
Sure there are exceptional mammals that lays eggs but like most mammals humans are born live, not in eggs. We have hair so we aren't birds and as part of vertebrates we have backbones too.

We bear fur, we give birth to live young, we are warm blooded, our females lactate and suckle our infants. All of the other things we do is just gravy, All(except for the platypus) mammals have fur(even dolphins and whales have almost like razor stubble), are warm blooded, give birth to live young(the platypus lays an egg), and lactate. We're mammals!

Definition of a mammal:
A warm-blooded, air breathing vertebrate that grows hair on its skin, gives birth to live young and (in females) produces milk for its young.
I'd say we fit that definition pretty well. :)
