I've heard of many types of them, but never really understood what they were. What is their purpose? How do they differ? Which is best?

These are all critical components that affect the quality of your ride. They control how well or how poorly your car handles the road. Bad shocks will give you and your car a beating over bumps, tracks, and dips. Coil springs smooth out the ripples left over from the shocks. Bad springs make the body feel like it's going to fall off of the car, or it takes too long to stop bouncing after a dip. Independent suspension is over my head. Repairs, modifications with aftermarket parts, or replacement of these things is best left to the pros!

Different names for different styles of parts and suspension geometry. New technology with a different name. If you didnt have it you'd crack your fillings over bumps.

Shocks bounce back against jounce
Struts resist moving both compression and extension
Wishbone is the shape of the arm that bolts to the car and the top or bottom of the suspension
Independent or mcpherson strut suspension, coil springs over struts, the struts bolt into the struts towers and onto the steering knuckle/hub assembly. The bottom is supported by ball joints. Space saving design that allows for transverse front engine front drive commuter eco freindly econoboxes.

The best suspension is the adjustable kind. Race parts that dont break and allow for dialing in control.

The questions you ask would take a text book to explain, and if you really want to the answers, then I recommend reading one. struts, shocks and coil springs are components of various suspension systems and wishbone and independent systems are types of suspension systems, to start.
