They say on the website that you can validate it by adding a credit card. Does validation then happen automatically? I have a different address on my credit card and as my shipping address.

Also, I am a Canadian customer. I went to the Address confirmation page and they seem to only do the alternate confirmation for customers in the US. Is this still an option?

Generally, the validation happens automatically if you use a credit card to verify that your address is valid.
Since your credit card does not have the same billing address the shipping address, the card validation will not work.
What you need to do is go to the "alternate address confirmation" link that is on the side of the paypal address verification page.
From there, they will send you a snail mail letter with a code on it. Then you have to log onto paypal, enter the code they sent you and then follow a few more steps to validate the address.
