A space settlement should be or realistically foresee a time when it is sufficient. Currently the exploration we have done has found no large source of water available. That is the number one drawback for settling space. Everything else is doable today! There was a book written back in the 1950s about colonists who used inflatable habitats for much of their environment . They had solid cores around which the habitats were inflated for radiation storms and for storage of inflatables in launch mode. Water was provided by oxygen and hydrogen being burned to run electric generators. Acceleration was measured in meters per hour rather than meters per second. These habitats were usually 3 to 5 persons per habitat and traveled in groups of 10 to 25 habitats therefor giving a sense of community and a chance to get away from your partners for a few hours. great for psychological health.

there are two possible answers one: people are buying and selling aceres on the Moon(which I think is stupid because look what happened to Earth when we colonized it)Two: A space station that will provide it's own Energy, food, and water.

A settlement would be self-sufficient,producing it's own air,food,power...children could be born there...
