Never good when the cat's out of the bag. The Cat of Nine Tails was kept in a bag on the mast of sailing vessels in the olden days. If word got round someone had been naughty.. well they took the cat out the bag and put it to work.
Nowadays all you get is a tongue-lashing. Which doesn't sound too bad in the literal sense...
