1. It was once an old Spanish missionary church which had been abandoned years earlier when Mexico declared independence from Spain.
2. Approximately 187 Texians held their ground against 5000 Mexican troops lead by Santa Anna. Didn't stand a chance, however.
3. Contrary to a previous answerer, Sam Houston did NOT die there (He died in 1863). However, several notable figures who met their demise there were Davy Crockett (yes, the one with the coonskin cap and the ballad popular in the 1950s), Jim Bowie, and William Barrett Travis.
4. The Battle of the Alamo was just one response to the Texians' (yes, that's what they referred to themselves as back then) declaring independence from Mexico on March 3, 1836.
5. Most of the people who were holed up in the Alamo had no military experience whatsoever. The ratio was bad enough, but the fact that the majority of occupants (including some women and children) had no fighting experience made their chances of victory very slim.
Here's another fact that's not so relevant: Ozzy Osbourne was arrested about 1983 for urinating on the Alamo after a night of drinking. As far as I know, he is STILL banned from the city of San Antonio.

Sam Houston did not die there, Davy Crockett did. Sam Houston later went on to defeat Santa Ana at San Jacinto and became first president of the Republic of Texas.
The Alamo was a former Spanish Mission in Texas.
All but one (there is some controversy about the one) Americans died at the Alamo (150+)
TheTexan forces at the Alamo were successful in stalling the Mexican Army long enough to let Sam Houston and the Texans get away.
Jim Bowie did die there.
The man in charge was a Texas Colonel named Travis, he died as well.
