why was ww1 a time of great change for canada?

In grade 10 history class they asked me this question and i said it was because canada became an Autonmous Nation. This ment that canada would no longer be a british colony and be independent.....but the question is worth 8 marks...what else should i put?

Well you could also add that women got the right to vote in Canadian elections starting in 1917, that the government got more involved in the economy (including the beginnings of federalincome tax and the nationalization of some of the railways to create Canadian National Railways), the labour unions became more militant and French-English relations took a turn for the worst over the issue of conscription.
