The Grateful Dead got their name from Funk & Wagnall's New Practical Standard Dictionary which bassist Phil Lesh had in his house. GRATEFUL DEAD- The motif of a cycle of folk tales in which the hero comes upon a group of people illtreating or refusing to bury the corpse of a man who had died without paying his debts. He gives his last penny either to bury the man or pay his debts. Within a few hours, he meets a travelling companion who aids him in some immpossible task, gets him a fortune, saves his life, ect. The story ends with the companion's disclosing himself as the corpse that the other one had befriended. There was also a folksinger back in the 1800's who went around named Lawton Childs singing what were known as "Grateful Dead" ballads based on the above situations. Alan trist who worked for the Dead publising company also put together a book called Water Of Life: Grateful Dead Folktales a book based on folktales about the above "Grateful Dead"

My ex husband was a Deadhead but I laughed when I saw his first few tapes labelled "Greatful Dead". I think they got their name from a book called "Book of the Dead" or something like that and it talked about the dead people being grateful....not totally sure now, sorry, been a long long time since I actually knew the answer.

well maybe we do not know, but perhaps it is the phrase itself, which we should consider.

What is so GRATEFUL about the dead, well we heard all the stories growing up about people who died for our freedom or took one in the *** from uncle sam to preserve the freedom of many more... But more pure to the notion in peace time even we think about "PEACEFUL knowledge" and the KNOWLEDGE of our "wise" forefathers the information that they left to use as so perhaps we could build on that and MOVE on in HIGHER HOPES of our "stairway to heaven" or "wildest-dreams" ... so as to say a MILLION VEGETABLES... I must be dreaming... under the table maybe, I died and here I am again to say hello. CAN I LIVE WHILE I'M YOUNG

look up the word grateful. as in i am very grateful you asked this question. it is not ............i am very greatful you asked this question. as you can see. greatful is underlined as a misspelled word.
they were originally called the warlock though. they changed it in 1965, when they found out there was another band called the warlocks.

Naming a band is always about a play on words. anything to make it stand out a little more helps. like for instance, "korn"
