a work of art, in my opinion, can be anything that is art. but a masterpiece, that is whole other story- i do agree with you in that aspect. reason being? i have seen true masterpieces, and so called ones that look like something my 4 year old son has created, (well i guess if you look at it that way all his artworks are masterpieces) i don't know maybe a masterpiece should only be the best piece of artwork that any one single artist creates. you make me think to hard. ouch

If the painting or sculpture is just like someone Else's then, no, it should not be labeled as a 'masterpiece' but, if it is ordinary, such as a bowl of fruit but nobody else has painted or sculpted it then, as long as its a fair piece of art, then it could be labeled as a master piece. It's really because, all art is beautiful in one way or another, unless of course it is copied.

Most of the Masterpieces are absolutely that! I feel that the people who judge this are not only considering the object itself but the circumstances of the creation. Of course it would have to be a good piece of art to start. It is also in the feeling you get when you see it.Ive seen some pieces that really make you feel so much in your chest that it almost hurts. Most of these were created by GOD though.

todays art has become a symbol of Status if it is purchased by a high-society fellow, at very high price, without knowing ABC of the real ART & Artistery . This has made a few very popular artists of the socalled Modern Art , quite known and controversial.
There is hardly any artist like Bendre, Sonal etc.

i agree that the standard for "masterpiece" is questionable, but "work of art" is and should be fairly open. last time i went to MOMA i kept shaking my head thinking my kids could just as well have done half the stuff in there.

Quite simply, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Art is subjectivity. One man's junk is another's treasure, and all that sort of rot.
