It is very important that you build up a body of work. Audition for anything that there is so you can get the experience treading the boards. It will also give you something to put on your resume. If you can get into summer stock productions, so much better. It will be an experience of professional theater, and if you are in two or three different stock performances in an Equity house you can then get your Actor's Equity card. With that you can then audition for Broadway shows. Start subscribing to Backstage and Showbusiness, professional trade newspapers. They always have auditions listed in the back, as well as advertisements from agents.
Finally, be prepared for a great deal of rejection. Remember, for every working actor there are 10,000 out of work actors. Also remember that this statistic includes ALL working actors, not just the small percentage that you have heard of in movies and TV.
Good luck. Write if you get work.

Another good way to get a foot through toe door is go to an acting college, whether or not you do gen. theater or go for the acting BFA you meet professors who have worked/ are working in the buisness and know people. also you meet upper classmen who are already auditioning and may have worked locally or regionally, or even on tours. school is ag ood way to net work and hone your craft

Make sure you have headshots made 8x10 headshots. Print acting resume on back of headshot. Get agents. If you are in Louisiana you have several acting meetup groups and Yahoo groups. Austin Yahoo Groups. These all have plenty of tips.
