They have been for years. Problem is that most Americans don't have any opportunity to utilize the language that they learn.
And too much emphasis is placed on learning Spanish....either because all of our good jobs will soon be there or because the folks doing all the bad ones are already here and don't want to learn English.
But I digress...in Europe the learn languages early and in many cases will have a practical opportunity to use those languages. When you realize that France and Germany are each by themselves only a bit bigger than Missouri you start to realize the issue in the US is about more than just education.
I myself had 8 years of German before actually going to Germany to study. And believe me 8 years of book learning did not give me any kind of fluency. 6 months of living among Germans gave me the ability to communicate that only exposure to the language can give you.

Many high schools already teach second languages like Spanish and French. It is taght as a option. English is till the main language and the basics are most important. English is the business language. Corect knowledge of English is very important.

Why??!!! Commerce will force those who wish to exceed in the international market place to learn such skills, just like other countries teach English in their schools so as to ensure a competitive means to be successful. We don't need that incentive. We ARE the language to learn!! Foreign languages are already offered as electives anyway! French and Spanish.

Apparently you are not an American because if you were you would know that various languages are taught in school. I studied French in High School for two years and Spanish in College.

They already do actually. My school only teaches Spanish, but in another town near me, I believe they teach their students Spanish, French, and German.
If you too would like to learn different languages, check your local library.

Some already teach spanish, aka mexican, but, in my opinion, the assumption that those who aren't in this country illegally need to learn a second language to satisfy those who are, is a totally ridiculous idea.
That said, let those who desire to learn a second language for their own gratification, do so, but, don't try to force any language on me that I don't want, nor need.

I don't know where you went to school but I graduated from a really small HS in 1966 and at that time they were offering Spanish, French and Latin.
