Have a vet evaluate her for breeding suitability first before paying a stud fee. At 20 years she may or may not be able to carry to term.

Do not breed to another overo or you have 25% risk of lethal white. http://www.apha.com/breed/lethalwhites01.html

You did not say what color your mare was so cannot evaluate what you'd possibly get with those crosses. Black and white babies are very flashy and I think they tend to sell for higher $$$. Find out if b/w stud is HOMOZYGOUS which means he has b/w gene on both sides.

Research APHA website for color cross info. Good luck; raising babies is fun but work and today's market has been really soft for horse sales. If keeping for yourself no worries.

Picking a stallion is definetly a hard desicion...but what an experience having your foal...good idea to have your mare checked if she is maiden at 20 if she is in good shape there shouldn't be any risk of breeding her...and blue eyes are a trait of overo so you have a great chance of getting the eyes...if your mare has a red gene she will probably dominate the black and white to a red based horse...check if the stallion carries the LOWL (lethal white gene) and if so definetly have her checked if he doesn't, your mare doesn't need to be checked... if she does and the stud does there is a 50% chance of having a lethal white foal...but both parents do need to be carriers since one gene comes from each parent. Then the color choice comes down to what you love best I know from experience just getting the foal out of the mare you love in the long run the color didn't even matter...good luck and best wishes for a foal!!

It does you no good to try to plan for color unless you know which color traits are recessive and which ones are dominant. Also I would make sure you have the mare checked well before breeding to make sure they feel she isn't already to old to foal. If she has foaled in the past it may be okay but have her checked. Equus magazine had an article about genetics not too long ago. Being an ex cattle inseminator and breeding six foals I can tell you there is a lot more to it then just picking out what you like and thinking you'll get what you want that's for sure.after reading above answers I wanted to add that just because a stallion is tall does not mean this is a trait that he is passing on. That would not be known until a study of many of his progency in several herds. Just because an animal possesses a quality does not mean he passes it on. Just like a cow with winning teat placement. It does not mean the calf will have it. Only if it is a dominant trait.

It really depends on which color you want the foal to be. If you breed with the red and white stallion chances are it will have blue eyes, ect. You also want to think about the hight of the horses, because hight matters in the "career" of the horse. If your going to jump the foal, choose the largest stud, and well look at the papers of each stallion, you'll want to know the bloodlines. Write this all down and then look to see which horse has the most pros and choose him.

I would not look so much at color as at quality. If a foal in not high quality, then he could be gold plated and not sell or make a decent performance horse. If both stallions are of equal quality, then pick the one you like best. Black & White is not the "in" color it was a few years ago. Buckskin in the new fashion today. Overos still bring more than tobiano price wise and still excell more in halter. Good Luck with whatever stud you choose.

You should definitely have a vet check her before breeding. 20 years old for a maiden mare is pushing it. You run a high risk of rupturing the uterine artery, which will cause almost instant death. If your vet gives you the go ahead take a hair sample and sent to check for lethal white. I have a breeding stock black paint mare that I breed. So fare I have breed her four times (starting when she was five) to four different studs and have had two breeding stock bays and one very loud bay, the fourth I'll find out next month. Good luck, and make sure to have her vetted first.

this is a good site to calculate the foals color, but in order for it to work correctly you need to know or at least have an educated guess about the studs (and mare's) genetic makeup. you didn't mention your mares color so any suggestion would just be a blind guess on my part. unless you are breeding for a specific color i would just pick the stud who seems best.

I think, these are the questions you should ask yourself. Which would make a good father for a couple of months. My personal opinion, the red and white or a brown and white.
