I need a good safe inexpensive Guinea Pig house. I mean something that goes in his cage for him to hide in. Does anyone know how I could make one with stuff I already have around my house? I'm pretty much broke and can't go out to buy anything so if you could stick to household items it'd be most appreciated.
I tried using an oatmeal container but he chewed on the plastic around the top, and I was afraid it would hurt him so I took it out. I read that you could let them nest in old clothes has anyone tried this, does it work?

a shoebox turned upside down with one or two 'doors' (holes) cut in it work great (and very cheap - can normally find these around the house) (also, safe for them to chew on)

I've used an old oatmeal container, I just removed the plastic ring on the one side, it pulls off fairly easily. If you have any scrap lumber around the house, try building him a small house. Just be sure to use untreated lumber, as GPs chew on anything! Also, I've used old clothing and hung them around the cage to use as "tents"...they love hiding behind these.

I have had guinea pigs for years..My sister is a vet uni graduate but did a project on my guinea pig Kaden. I asked her one time what can i use to make him a house. She said wood that is not indoor treated, because it has chemicals in it and try to smooth it down when u make it by sanding it so they don't cut their feet on it. If you use glue to hold it together, make sure he can't reach it to chew it. I used nails. and made sure i hammered them in past the wood a bit then sanded that too. Don't use paint on it. Make sure the wood is not mouldy or full of bugs if using scrap wood.

I've used the Timber Hide-A-Way houses that you can get from any pet store. My pig loves her house!
In a pinch I've used cardboard boxes....but she just chews them and it's not so good for them to injest too much paper or cardboard.
I'd go with the timber house, it gives them comfy place to hide and they do love that security of it.
Have fun, they are great pets!

mine just love cardboard boxes. if you can find a big cardboard tube too then they are always very much appreciated. A good idea is to get some old rags, (washed so there is nothing that could be harmful on them) which are made of natural fibers (cotton/linen etc) and line a cardbord box with them then they will love it. a plus is that they can chew cardboard and as long as it has no dyes in it will do them no harm.

I used a clear tupperware storage bin and It really did the trick and was easy to clean! I also took some plywood and non-toxic wood glue and built him a little home (this may be more than your willing to do:)
