I remember a few days I ago I was having a conversation about the parallels of Nietzsche and Hitler, however I had a problem remembering some facts of both men. So does the mind just release some facts? How do we forget?

The mind stores only keywords related to a particular memory.

When we recall that memory, we recall the keywords and the mind fills in the details.

Of course, that means that our memory is not infallible. In fact, all memory is subjective and open to interpretation.

The mind is amazing! It can hold an unmentionably large amount of information which cannot be measured with any computer.

On yahoo! news a couple days ago I read about a man who memorized more than 20,000 decimal places back in the pi equasion

I think this man's story may be the key to unlocking the question of memory and the brain. Check out the source link!

The mind stores just about everything it comes in contact with. Our memory capacity is enormous. However, the problem is retrieving something from our memory.

In order to remember something you have to have a sign or a clue that will enable you to "find" the information you're looking for. When we can't remember something it's not that the information is erased from our memory, we just can't find it!
There are a lot of mnemonics, strategies that can help with remembering information. You can find more information about them here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mnemonics

And here's an example of a person with extraordinary memory! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shereshevski

that is all i can find. and it has some points. you can't really equate brain storage with computer storage (not that you are, but a lot of people do). as far as any more solid of an answer, the only thing i have heard that sounded relatively concrete is that a healthy brain can recall everything that it has ever heard, read, seen or experienced. but we can't actually bring those memories to the surface because we don't need them on a daily basis, and they are tucked away somewhere that is hard to access. but hopefully someone one may have some more helpful information.
