Over time solar heating is much less expensive to heat a swimming pool compared to a gas heater. You should have a good location to place the solar panels IE; roof. You need to install the panels in sunny south western view. Also invest in a automation controller if you go with solar. The controller will sense the air and water temperature and turn the valve feeding the solar panels off when the air temperature goes lower then the water temperature. This will prevent cooling the pool water at night or on a cold day. Also a pool cover will help retain the heat you gain from dissipating over night.

I wouldnt say they are better..because solar heated pools are heated by the sun. If the sun is not out, then the pool wont get getting heated.

Not better, but certainly cheaper to heat. That is, if you are thinking of black bags on the roof, and circulating water from the pool through them.
