One of Queen Elizabeth's courtiers, Sir John Harrington, invented the flushing toilet. A 'john' was installed in the queen's palace.

During the past few years I have visited my father and mothers homesteads in Ireland. My Father on a farm, my mother in a city (Dublin). Both, migrated to this country in the 1950's.
On a recent roundabout in London, a tour of sites, it was pointed out to me that you could yell you were in stress. The Police were then required to "shield you" while you relieved yourself in the street. People did what they did in the streets and gardens. The "outhouse" was incorporated and exported from the America's and generally from the Germans.
There were no sanitation concerns or measures during either the Elizabethan or previous reigns. Forgive me, however, you did what you did whever you could as long as it was not where you eat.
