Yes. Definitely. I gave mine mobiles when they started senior school (aged 11). It gave me peace of mind knowing they could use it in an emergency and knowing I could contact them if they were very late for example.

Verizon actually doesnt sell the Migo anymore. You could try the lgvx3450 which is a great starting phone. If you are going to consider something like the Migo that only has 4 buttons just keep in mind that you will probably sign a 2 year contract on the phone and wont be able to get another one until that contract is over. For most, by the time the child is 13 there is no way they are going to carry around a little phone with 4 buttons.
Verizon has a very cool program called Chaperone. Basically you can set up "zones" that you know your child will be in. For example, if your child will be at school from 7am-3pm you can enter that in your "parent device" or online. If your child travels outside of the zone or address, you will get a text message sent to your phone letting you know. If you want to know more about this program, let me know. I think its really cool and very inexpensive. You can IM me

I think it's important for children to have a way of contacting the appropriate people in case of an emergency..however a real cell phone is a little drastic...try Verizon's MEgo....only the parent can program three numbers that the child can call.....it also has special buttons for the police and fire department.....it's a good starting "cell phone" and the parents can have complete control of who the child calls and how often....

NO!!! What did we do 20 years ago, go to a pay phone. Cell phones are so over rated and so out of control. People can't even make a purchase without the dam thing attached to their ear. I think they are horrible. They should definitely be banned from use while driving. Get real people, things are not that dire that they can't wait for you to reach your next destination.

I think they can have 50 cents and a pay-phone....when we were young we only had pay phone's....a cell phone for an 11 yr old is extreme......just give him some money and direct him towards a pay-phone.....11 yr's and not an emergency yet.....he'll be okay.....even if something does happen he'll get ahold of you...they always do

curiously so. i might p.c.. it up next time I observed it mendacity around someplace and placed it up the place you knew the place it replaced into and he or she did not and see how long it takes her to realize it particularly is lacking. while she does ask her the place she left it final and then while she will't discover it tell her you stumbled on it laying around on/in ____ and talk approximately why a cellular telephone is the two a privilege and a duty and that until eventually she will coach herself to be greater to blame that she will't have it back for a set volume of time. while she does get it back possibly she would be greater to blame with it and not bypass away it everywhere.

no what emergency can an 11 year old have. they aren't old enough to be home alone. nor go out alone. they should have a parent with them at all times so no an 11 year old doesn't need a phone its an unnecessary expense

I absolutely do think it's ok, if you teach them to use it responsibly. My son (age 11) has one. I insisted that he have one because the school he attends does alot of outside activities. He's not allowed to have it on during classes, but he has it on himself if anything comes up..... he needs a ride home early, or needs something for school.
My son uses his phone only to call his father and I, nobody else. It has been a good thing for him to have,
