You could try for a retro look - it'd allow you to stand out and have an individual look, but you could still pick out something "pretty" - if that's your perogative. Older styles are coming back in new waves.
I know it sounds strange, but the Salvation Army is a great place to find cheap vintage pieces. If you're creative, you could go there, grab a unique dress that could use small touch ups. If you're not into work, maybe instead of the usual long, huge Cinderella-style dresses, you could look to shorter dresses. They're becoming more and more fashionable to wear to big events, and you could choose something either body-hugging or a bit poofy (taffeta's always fun).
If you're really creative and like to stand out, there's a contest, Stuck At Prom, held by the duct tape company and you could design a dress completely out of duct tape and create it, enter the contest, and perhaps win a scholarship!
Good luck!

I wore a sleek black dress to my prom. If you like punk, you should probably go with black (which works because too many prom dresses look like barbie dresses anyway). There are some that you can find that are all black and have netting or other interesting materials in them. That could work. Maybe get a dress that isn't actually full length and wear fishnets or similar tights under it.
It might be too preppy for you, but I always liked the ones that were black and pink, becuase I thought the mix of impressions was fun.
You could go vintage;

or try to get one with a corset-look

or for an outright goth dress, you could go to this website for ideas

You might want to mix and match.
Or get a normal prom dress and spike your hair or do it in a kind of gothic updo.
Some last minute advice: Prom is never as good as the buildup is. People are telling you to drop your style and go "classy," but why do that, and why can't you be edgy like your signature is? When you look back on your pictures in 20 years, they will mean more to you if you see what you really were, not if you look like you were trying to fit in with the crowd for one preppy "rite of passage" occasion.
And anyway, everyone in their perfect gowns freak-dancing is always a little weird anyway. what you chose will probably fit the event better! Best of luck, and I hope my ideas help.

Think real hard about this punk thing, before you go to the prom. The prom is a very special "rite of passage". 10 or 20 years from now you are going to look on those pictures and wonder, "what was I thinking". Why don't you go totally against the "you" that everyone expects(if that is punk)...surprise them all and go girly/glam!

Wear a sexy Black or Red dress with a v cut on front and back. Simple but wear nice accesories and a great makeup. I think you can dress nice and still be your punk self. You could buy the rhinestone converse they look nice. My cousin wore them for her after party with her wedding dress. They are hot. And remember its prom you can change from punk to classy just for one night i know you would be the center of attention

Cool on the prom thing. I am a bit punkish, too :-). Dye your hair black (if it isn't black already) and find a bink dress ( not one of those silk fancy ones) probably one with sorta ruffles on the skirt part ( have an underlayer to it). If you can find black arm sleeves or socks, use those. Use dark make up colors and put your hair up ( i don't know any hair styles lol) For shoes, I'll leave that to you :-) Hope this helps!!!!

Try to find a black dress with red trim, any style...
Actually I'm kind of in the same dilemma, trying to find a punk but still formal dress. Good luck!

If you're like most girls that dress 'punk' you're probably very beautiful when going outside the box and dressing in formal attire. I recommend finding a nice, formal, elegant dress that shows a different side of you. I bet this will turn some heads and surprise a lot of your friends, you may even surprise yourself!

Find a great plain black dress, maybe black satin, add a chain belt fastened with a red rose. If the ress is floor length you could wear red and white striped hose with shiny black boots! Just be yourself and let that shine through! Strapless dress with long black gloves and lots of bracelets!!
