um.... Tenchi Muyo
The Meloncholy of Haruhi Suzumiya(No comedy, just really funny)
and that is all I can think of. I am not much of an anime watcher. I have only watched two anime series. Haruhi Suzumiya and Tokyo Mew Mew.
Try manga. There is a lot more choices.

Naruto is OK for more mature people, but I like YuYu Hakasho, plenty of violence, Inuyasha is also good. I'm pretty new to anime too, so I don't know all the stories and plot lines. Hope I helped!

Trying not to put what other people have already. But here are some shows with swords and stuff in it that I think are pretty good...
Utawarerumono - (Fantasy/War) - ****
Scrapped Princess - (Fantasy/Adventure) - ****
Record of Lodoss War - (Fantasy/Adventure) - ***
Although its not much of a fighting show i'd highly recommend...
Death Note - (Fantasy/Mystery) - *****
Most of the titles above you will probably have to download on the Internet or watch on youtube.com

"GetBackers", it's sort of like a modern version of "Rurouni Kenshin".
It got the retired tough fighter that look harmless (Ginji in GB, Kenshi in RK), the rascal who always put his food and drinks on the tab (Ban in GB, Sanasuke in RK), lots of melee fightings (unarmed and armed), a world based on 'real life', etc.
"Rave: Groove Adventure" is also good, but it's aimed more toward teenagers who are into a blend of fantasy and modern life.
"Black Cat" seems to be kinda good, kinda like "Rave: Groove Adventure" but kinda focused a "GetBackers" style of a bunch powerful warriors, in a world that resemble this real life world. (Elie though is cuter than any oba-chan ;) Though somehow... why do I got the feeling this story seems to be a mix Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, along with lots of other stories. Train is sooo Gundam Wing's Hiiro, but I like his version of Relena more.
And of course, you could always try "Street Fighter II: V" or something like that.

Naruto. It's meant for older kids, but the fanbase is way beyond that. Same with Avatar: The Last Airbender. (if that counts as anime) But it's entirely your choice. Hope that helps!!!! :)

FullMetal Alchemist. It has its lighthearted moments but veers into darker territory, esp towards the end.
