I was called by a staffing firm to permanently work with an employer. The employer hired me and the day before my start date put me through the ringer because they didn't want to pay the staffing firm for their services. The employer ended up hiring me under another company name, in order to hire me and avoid a law suit. I started with the company and have only been there a couple of days. The place reaks of smoke because most everyone smokes inside their offices. I was warned by another employee that the owners fight all the time, they verbally abuse the employees and micromanage them.
It is the environment I didn't want to work in. I'm in need of the money too.
I'd like to quit....what would you do?
My first partial paycheck would be this Friday. I'm thinking of collecting 2 checks, continue looking for a job and leaving with a little money in hand. What would you do?

Keep that job, and scour Monster, Career Builder, etc. in your off time.

That company sounds so shady, I can see why you want to leave. Don't give them an inkling that you are looking elsewhere, or they will let you go.

Your employer seems disreputable and you shouldn't stay there too long, but you ahve to pay your bills. I would try to make the best of the situation, while you get some experience and figure out why you are not finding anything great. Do you have a good resume? Are you prepared for interviews? Do you make a good impression? Do you have a good work record?

Get three good friends to review your resume and make suggestions. Then submit it to several job search sites that allow you to post for free. Here are a few. http://www.ridleypa.com/jobs.html
If this company cheats the staffing firm, don't you think they will cheat their employees too?

You could search for jobs based on your qualifications on some of the major job websites like Hotjobs,Monster, Careerbuilder and post your resume on these job boards. You could also search for jobs on websites like Craigslist and Simplyhired. More information available at

You should work there as long as possible or until you have a better position.
