In Mexico, there are laws that give indigenous people government papers in their language. Does the U.S. have that, or is it not really necessary because of cultural genocide aka "assimilation".

Native Pride: That's exactly what I'm saying. The fact that a lot if not most of the very few Native Americans left don't even know their native language is proof of the Cultural Genocide.

Kevin A: Again, that's my point. The native American culture has been exterminated. No I don't think Mexican is native American. We are the product of the genocide done on native americans during colonial times.

Native culture has not been exterminated. Native people and their culture is rising, not going extinct.
Because of oppression we do have languages that are dieing and some cultural ceremonies that have been lost. However, this does not mean that Native culture is exterminated. Native culture is strong and still alive!
And I believe that yes if someone speaks their Native language as their first language a government document would have to be provided to them in their Native language. However, most Natives are not brought up to know their tribal language as their 1st language and even if they do they will learn English. Having said that I believe it is government law that you have to provide documents in Any one's Native language if need be.

In 1993, the United States passed the Native American Languages Act of 1990 which allows Native American governing bodies to use their written and spoken language for governmental and educational purposes. The purpose of the Act was to preserve the cultural heritage of the indigenous people of the United States.

I can only speak for my tribe which is Navajo. You can't become a tribal leader unless you speak Navajo. You also cannot apply for Navajo scholarships unless you can read, write, and speak Navajo. As far as official documents, I have never seen any written completely in Navajo. It will probably happen some day though. As far as other tribes are concerned, most are within three to four generations of dying out and don't really have any culture to preserve anyways.

You nailed it. Cultural genocide. And we are still doing it to the original americans. How do you "discover" an already existing land that is inhabited. You don't! Try walking down the street and "discovering" a brand new Hummer.

There is a Spanish translation on your food stamps. And your wic vouchers. Spanish is on everything anymore. Illegals are no longer welcome here.
