it is the way ppl "debate" nowadays...they just call people names instead of stating their reasons for disagreeing...

Because they hearken back to the 1930's when the Nazis began identifying the Jews, and instituting individual identifying numbers so they could control their populations.
Did you know it is happening right here with the use of the Social Security Number, which was prohibited by the SSA Act in the 1930's as a result of what was happening in Germany.
People are scared of stereotyping or tracking anyone, because they have long memories. Start With the Mexicans, move on to the Asians and Middle Easterners, then the Africans, then who comes next? Who is left to complain with any power. Remember the one honest man?

They do a background check for most jobs... I don't see why a background check would be so inappropriate in this case...
...I'm sure some people looking to immigrate could have undue woes because of crimes such as political dissent being on their records when coming from certain types of countries... but the extent of those crimes would have to be determined by the person reviewing their application.
Background checks could slow down the immigration process a great deal... but its an intelligent practice.
I don't see how you could be called a Nazi for this... it just makes sense... especially since as Bush will point out... the terrorists on chomping at the bit to get in here and screw us all up.

I also think that background checks on immigrants would be a decent idea. That being said, the Nazis were associated with extreme right wing beliefs including racial superiority and ethnic hatred and used police state techniques including using the Gestapo in order to harass and intimidate. Is it possible that something else that you may have said may have triggered that response? I’m not accusing; I’m only asking.

No, I didn't get your intentions the first time around - your question did sound discriminatory. I agree with background checks - they already exist, and should be very thorough - I certainly hope they've improved since 2001 - but you can't blame everything on immigrants when there is so much scum and so many sociopaths here as well, right? If this is what you meant, then we're on the same page - sorry for the first one, if I misunderstod you.

Because that's what Nazis did in the 1930s. I'm not saying you're a nazi, just that's why someone might make the comparison.

Last straw for some in arguing/debating. Call the other a monster. Lawyers with a losing case go for emotion not facts when that is all they have. Unless you are planning on invading Poland, realize that you won the argument.

Translate that as: I disagree with you, I know that Nazis are bad and I disagree with bad people. Therefore you are a Nazi. Python Logic (Monty Python not the Snake)

Nobody has ever said that. Immigrants have always had to undergo background checks.

Because there is no reasonable argument against it, liberals - as they always do - must resort to dismissing any logical position they disagree with as either 'nazi, racist or homophobic'.
As soon as they trot those old canards out, you have won the debate.
That kind of name-calling is the last gasp of the intellectually challenged.
(These are, of course the same idiots who claim asking people to identify themselves at the polling booth on election day is RACIST!!!I I guess when they say 'all votes should count' they include the illegal, the incarcerated and the deceased.)
Liberals are simply devoid of solutions to problems.
Personal attacks are so much easier than thoughtful debate.

The liberals have a limited list of labels to pin on conservatives. Just a way to deflect debate away from the issue
