The Maya rose to prominence c.300 in present-day S Mexico, Guatemala, N Belize, and W Honduras. Inheriting the inventions and ideas of earlier civilizations, such as the Olmec and Teotihuacán, they developed astronomy, calendrical systems, hieroglyphic writing, and ceremonial architecture, including pyramid temples. The tropical rainforest area was cleared for agriculture, and rain water was stored in numerous reservoirs. They also traded with other, distant people, clearing routes through jungles and swamps. Most people farmed, while centres such as Tikal and Bonampak were largely ceremonial and political, with an elite of priests and nobles ruling over the countryside. Maya civilization started to decline, for reasons unknown, c.900, although some peripheral centres still thrived, under the influence of Mexico. Sorry, I researched it for you. Nobody knows for sure what happened and why they didn't survive.

No one knows why the Mayans dissappeared. Some people think that because there were so many royal members to the throne that the commoners just killed off all the royals and eventually they left. Remember the Mayan rich families used to marry their children into dozens of other royal families and have lots of wives that had maybe 6 children and those children each had 6 children, etc.
