Our latest theories say that there was nothing before the Big Bang. The Big Bang was just caused by a fluctuation in the vacuum energy. What caused this fluctuation is unknown but string theory is trying to come up with the answer to that. The theory is called M Theory and says that higher dimensional objects called branes collided causing the birth of our universe.

The best guess science has either nothingness or exactly the same as 5 minutes AFTER the big bang, except in reverse. We can't know. It is quite impossible for any experiments to tell us what happened before. All of the universe came into existence at that point. We can only measure and work with things that exist, thus, we have no idea about things before existence. There are theories out there that try to include more into the realm of existence but until these can be verified, the bouncing big crunch theory is the most interesting.

Scientists have assumed that there was nothing before the Big Bang, which is hard for some people to visualize. Actually there were no "five minutes" before the big bang, because time did not exist before the big bang. Most people would think by nothing, I mean a vacuum of black space. No, nothing means nothing.

Several people claim that there was no time before the big bang, but that is pure speculation. The only thing that science claims is that there was no space-time immediately before the big bang. The concept of time was therefore different than it is now, as there was no space involved with the time. Hence, who knows what this question even means? I don't.

two membranes on collision course with one another (according to one theory of the big bang).

read the book 'the elegant universe' by brian greene or watch the movie, the very end of it talks about a recent development regarding the origin of our universe. i don't remember it completely, but it has to do with membranes colliding with each other and releasing the energy that created our universe.

Nothing existed before the big bang.
There was a potential or nothing could have occurred.
The potential also had to be finite or it could not have transitioned from nothing to something.

no one knows and no one will ever know, so it really does not matter to ask because no one will ever find out.
