How to unlock a cell phone?

I have a surewest phone but am out of there service range. And I just bought this phone 3 months ago. Is there a way to unlock it so Metro will be able to activate it? metro sells the same exact phone so I don't see why I would waste the money to buy the same one to get there service when I have the phone but jsut a different user. Thank you.
