Eclipse, either lunar or solar, is regarded as impure and spoiled. The shadows formed due to eclipse make the temples desecrated. According to Hindu mythological beliefs, the spoiling starts well before the commencement of eclipse, and lasts till it is concluded. It is also believed that on visiting the temple during eclipse, wickedness grows and virtuousness diminishes. The temples open only after proper rituals are performed and after proper cleaning. There is a scientific reason also behind this, science says that during the course of eclipse certain ultraviolet rays and soft x-rays emitted from the corona of Sun, which are harmful. In India the temples are kept closed to prevent the masses to come out of their houses, thus avoiding the harmful effects of eclipse.
