I wouldn't go searching for a nickname for her. If one comes to you, then use it. But you gave her the name Athena... so why not call her Athena?
My husband chose our son's name for the reason being his initials would be "J.T." and he thought that would be a "cool nickname" for him. But, he nor anyone else in our family/friends has yet to call our son J.T. His name fits him just fine, so I see no reason to call him something different. If kids catch onto his initials and call him "J.T." when he gets in school, then that's fine... but to us, he will always be Jason.

Anything that shortens the name and makes it easier and catchier to say will make the name stick, and get well used. Americans aren't fond of using nicknames (unless derogatory) until later on maybe, like in high school or college, even later at work. I would suggest Thena or maybe Lynnie, but the name doesn't lend too many choices does it? Maybe just going away from the name to something like sunny, belle, kitt, any cute sounding name. There are some other nicknames I could suggest but they may be thought of as corny. I think a nickname is a great idea, it gives a sense of closeness and bonding which is great.
