Just getting state help does not make you unfit sound more like a pride issue.Getting the help means that you are a good mom and care that you child eats and has a place to live.To me a unfit parent is one that will spend their last cent on drugs or something for them and their child is hungry or sleeping in the car cause its more important to get high than to pay rent.If the state offers job training GO FOR IT! a lot of the times it may be a state job with great benefits 401k's but show that jerk who kicked you out that you can do it on your own.Doesn't happen overnight but don't give up.Been a single mom for 13 years and yes needed state assistance only for 9 months just to get a place and stable. But my son is worth standing on a street corner asking for money if that's what it takes to feed him.Just know it gets better and draw your strength for your little one,the funding is there in times like this that's why we pay taxes and the cheese is good.lol Good luck you can do anything if you really want to.

In custody cases, unfit is defined as charges being pressedor past charges of child abuse, drug abuse,or mentalillnesses that prevent one from carrying out everyday chores. These have to be proven by police or hospital records and not hearsay accusations. The mother also has the right to refuse custody if she so chooses. Joint custody just means that you two will have equal say so in raising your child but you will be residential custodian parent where dad will be non residential parent who pays child support and has state mandated visitation rights. Hope this helps and good luck

1. Don't neglect your child (this means not feeding your child, improper hygiene in clothes and body)
2. Your house should be in impeccable order. vaccuum, dust, dishes, garbage should all be taken care of.
3. Baby proof your house. Put baby gates up where necessary and locks on cupboards. Electrical outlets should be properly covered.
4. Spend as much time nurturing your child as possible. This includes reading to them, playing with them and helping them discover the new things in the world around them
5. Don't take your child out later than his/her bed time unless it's an absolute emergency.
6. If there is a court order for joint custody, you must relinquish care to your ex when the designated dates come along.
7. NEVER hit your children as a lesson to them! Spanking is rarely even accepted by social services these days.

Neglect, abusive, if you did drugs or was an alcoholic are a few that come to my mind.

Some men play mind games with women when they are getting divorced making them think they cannot care for the kids. You are doing the right things by getting educated so that you can hold down a good job and provide a home and food for your child. Be strong and don't fall into his pit of making you think you are unfit.

Good luck!

Unfit mother - hurting/abusing your child, being on drugs, leaving your child unattended, having your child watch their own parents abuse each other and being a non-nurturing mother. Those are some of the things that a bad mother can do and lose custody of your own child.

It sounds to me like your taking the right steps for your financal being.I think unfit would be like, beating to hard on the child, not keeping an eye on him safety wise not feeding him or her right,I'm not which you have, theres many claims that can be made, I would get a lawyer or social service involved on your behalf,I don't care what he says to you,you don't know what he's going to come up with when you's show up in that court room, just remember, divorce's are not nice don't let him con you before hand, you might be sorry.STAY ALERT !!!

You or someone else abusing or neglecting the child-----if the father wants joint custody he does not have to prove you are unfit--he only has to prove that he is capable of takeing care of the child also!

UNFIT means if you DON'T provide the following:
*Clean and tidy home. *Well care doctor visits for your child, sick doctor's visits. *Heat, hot water, electricity, running water, refrigerator, food, clothing, bed, education, safe and clean enviornment, supervision when your home or not. Also if you are a drug addict, alcoholic, and/or show signs of violent, abusive behavior. Also if you beat and or neglect your child in any way. If you ever feel overwhelmed in any way please be sure and ask for help (you can even call the police if you can't get in touch with a family member, and or friend),
