Emo stands for emotional
Emo is a somewhat ambiguous, controversial slang term most frequently used to describe a fashion or subculture which is usually defined to have its roots in punk fashion and subculture, as well as some attributes of gothic fashion and subculture
Emo fashion is usually defined to have roots in punk fashion as well as gothic fashion. By almost all current definitions, emo clothing is characterized by tight jeans on males and females alike, long fringe (bangs) often brushed to one side of the face, dyed black hair, tight t-shirts which often bear the names of rock bands, studded belts, belt buckles, Chuck Taylor All-Stars or other black shoes - often old and beaten up - and thick, black-rimmed glasses. Emo fashion has changed with time; early trends included haircuts similar to those worn by the Romulans and Vulcans in Star Trek, tightly fitting sweaters, button-down shirts, and work jackets (often called gas station jackets). This has fallen out of fashion nowadays.

An Emo is an overreactionary, melodramatic, crybaby cutter. Someone who takes real emotions and dramatizes them for attention, and injures themselves, pretends to be suicidal and depressed, or in some cases, is suicidal and depressed, but can't get the help that they need because the people who are pretending are clogging up the therapy system by scaring their parents out of their wits. Search for the other question about the difference between goth and emo for more information. P.S. I hope the person who called you this was mistaken, or confused about the difference between emo and goth.

1) Emo stands for Emotional. Emo is a broad title that covers a lot of different styles of emotionally-charged punk rock.
2) Like a Goth, only much less dark and much more Harry Potter.
3) Genre of softcore punk music that integrates unenthusiastic melodramatic 17 year olds who dont smile, high pitched overwrought lyrics and inaudible guitar rifts with tight wool sweaters, tighter jeans, itchy scarfs (even in the summer), ripped chucks with favorite bands signature, black square rimmed glasses, and ebony greasy unwashed hair that is required to cover at least 3/5 ths of the face at an angle.
4) In the early 90s there was a movement in the hardcore genre that came to be known as "Emotive Hardcore," spearheaded by Rites Of Spring. Harder-core-than-thou kids, who swore by Dischord Records a la Minor Threat, actually coined the term "Emo" as something of a put-down for the kids who really liked Rites Of Spring, Indian Summer and this new wave of "Emotive" Hardcore bands. That's right, "Emo" was once not something kids called themselves. The field exploded outwards from there - Level-Plane Records has always been the most famous Emo label. Acts like Yaphet Kotto, I Hate Myself, Saetia, Hot Cross, A Day In Black And White, Funeral Diner, I Would Set Myself On Fire For You, You And I, and hosts of others came in the next decade. Most emo bands have since broken up, but there's still the occasional hold-out (again, the majority of Level-Plane Records' roster has been a procession of emo acts). Like most DIY hardcore/punk of the time, a majority found its way onto vinyl and not much else. Some people consider bands like Fugazi, and later Sunny Day Real Estate, a progression of emo, but personally, I don't quite follow that philosophy.
The Difference between Emo And Goth:
- Emos Hate themselves
- Goths hate Everyone
- Emos Want to Kill themselves
- Goths Want to kill Everyone

Emo: a cheap version of goth without the full comitment. they cut themselves and drink alot. they are also into poetry and writing. they listen to "emo music" which is actually not a defined genre, its just certain bands they listen to.emo kids will sometimes call themselves "scene" not emo. Scene is slightly different, but essentialy the same thing. guyliner is popular and the girls tend to have short boyish hair. these people usaully are depressed (or act like it), but they still wear the little kid sesame street T-shirts. they say things like "that was basically amazing". its a larger trend amoung boys then girls.
BUT if you where just acting weird or were upset emo does sometimes just stand for Emotional and is not refering to the group of people.

An emo is someone who is emotional and and likes to listen to depressing music, wear dark clothes, and be sad all the time. I had a lot of emo friends. They're almost always depressed and like to listen to really sad music and most of them contemplate or have attempted suicide. Basically. I think it's someone who has given up on life and instead of trying to become more proactive and outgoing in the world they decide that the best way to deal with their problems is to ignore the world around them. Most hate people and social situations and death appears to be the only answer to their life.

'emo' is basically a term like many before me have said, now used to describe people with some sort of an emotional problem.
Most 'emo's are categorized as self-harmers, and I know I have been accused of being one.
They have no relation to goths, they lean more into the punk rutine, but they are not accepted.
'Emo's, at least in my school are sort of out there, just being picked on about their ways of dressing and listening to music and such.
Many of us, if you should choose to label me as some others do, are just nomal people, we like to be different, and we get our point across easily, when we have a statement, we tell it to everyone.
But 'emo' was truely and firstly a genre of music

it should be just a genre of music, now people call it a trend where [sterotypically] you wear black, are sad all the time, and either have depression/cut yourself.
there are even websites that show you "how to be emo" because there are so many specific styles to "emo."

(even though thats wikipedia, its helpful)
i think labels and stuff are pretty stupid if you ask me..

Emo is pretty much short for overly emotional.
Takes things way to hard.
Most people who call others that tend to just be trying to talk trash about someone.
However if you do think that you become dangerous depressed then you need to get counsoling or talk to someone you trust.
