I'm always freezing at work, the air conditioning blows all day long directly on me (during the winter). I wear layers of clothing and normally must wear my coat all day long. This past week I discovered a thermostat in hidden spot - the temperature has ranged from 55-59 degrees all week.

No, that is not a reasonable temperature in which to work, especially in a cubicle office environment. Depending on the type of equipment you work with it should be set at around 72 degrees in the summer and 68 degrees in the winter.

If you work in IT in a computer center (like NASA or something similar) then the temp usually ranges around the 50 to 60 degree range.

If you work in a meat locker, it's definitely below freezing.

It is also a terrible usage of energy on the company's part. However, studies have shown that employees are more productive in a cooler environment, but 55 is way too low, they are more productive at shivering, than working. Ask your supervisor what is going on. You may wish to check with HR on office comfort, safety and health issues.

Good luck in working this out.

No, I do not think that is reasonable. Why do they have the air conditioning on in the winter??? Now, I am the type that likes it cool, but that is just too cool. For working probably about 65 to 70 degrees is good. For sleeping I like it about 60 or less, but that is when you are supposed to be all bundled up, not at work!!

That seems a tad on the chilly side.

65-70 seems a little more comfortable.

Here's what i think

I've heard of research being done that showed surprising results in the productivity of an office environment at varying temperatures.

basicly the warmer it gets the lazier your employees get. You get more work done when it's a little brisk in the office. That might be why.

Unless your boss is actually Mr Freeze in secret

It seems to be a very low temp to keep it on. That seems a rediculous temp, maybe going inside on a 100 degree day, it would be nice, but then only for about 20 minutes, then it would get chilly even with it that hot outside. We keep the temp in our house at 66 degrees, and that too me seems chilly. I think 55 is too cold.

No, its not reasonable. It should be a a reasonable range such as 65-70. Outside at 55 you have to wear a coat.

Some computers need that temperature to operate properly. So if your office is the hub of a computer network, yes. If it's just because the boss is training to be on the Jamaican bobsled team, then no.

No, the national conmfort zone is 68-72. There is actually an OSHA standard for office comfort.

Totally unreasonable. No one should have to work in an environment like that.

Complain to your boss, and if nothing is done, buy an electric heater, plug it into THEIR electric outlet where you work, and be comfortable.
