Any high level form of education can be used to improve one's life, the world in general, and make a positive contribution to life in a vicarious way by: intelligent polite conversation; understanding complicated situations; not over-reacting to controversey; making intelligent and fair decisions on a day to day basis; defending oneself against bad advice or criminal defraudment; the intelligent use of newspapers, machines, communications, or equipment; the skilled use of mathematics for self-business or home-finance; a willingness to cooperate with others; a reduction of jealousy, envy, hate, greed, revenge, and other human failings.
A marketable education such as: medicine, finance, computers, engineering, or law, can be directly applied to society for visible physical results with a higher paycheck for one's higher standard of living. But any form of higher education only results in self-improvement and improvement of society.
