I really never thought there would be someone who can be labeled as the "greatest". There were so many great men.
How about Alexander the Great?
He was tutored by Aristotle who taught him rhetoric, literature, medicine and philosophy.
The Greeks claim that Alexander is one of them, however Alexander is Macedonian.
The Persian empire fell to his army after the Battle of Issus in 333 BC.
In 332 BC–331 BC Alexander entered Egypt as a liberator.
It is worth mentioning that the phoenician city of Tyre fell to Alexander after resisting from January to July 332 BC. It was very heroic of Tyre. The Macedonian and Greek soldiers, who got frustrated by the length of the siege, avenged themselves on the populace.
PS~ In addition to being a geeky developer, I know a thing or two about history.

So many people to chose from! I am split between Buddha, Martin Luther King Jr, David Ben Gurion (you may not agree with him, but he made a lot of correct choices in very difficult situations- like when he got rid of the Jewish terrorist groups), Franklin Roosevelt or perhaps even Tony Blair.

I agree with Codename and Maro. The greatest man in history has to be Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of God be upon him.) He's an inspiration in how much he spread the beautiful religion of Islam, and how faithful he was.

Martin Luther King was pretty special... if it wasn't for him, we'd still be living in the stone age, where racial discrimination is considered something "natural".
And if it wasn't for him, black and white people would still have to be separated while going to school, or even just taking the bus. It's thanks to him that humanity opened its mind, and learned how to look beyond racial prejudice!
