They have a special membrane called a tapetum lucidum that allows them to gather light and reflect it back out. See more info below:

Some animals are nocturnal, this means they are usually up at night. And most of these critters, except skunks have eyesight many times better than ours to start with. An owls eyesight is 8 times better than ours. And alot of the nocturnal animals/birds can't see very well during the day. Except for skunks, they have poor sight, they see mostly shadows. But they can aim (in any direction) the glands that spray the good stuff. Most of these critters do hunt with their hearing, which is way better than ours too.And bats have radar, that's how they fly so close and get what want every time. But if you a bat inside your house, the best thing to do is turn OFF all the lights. Open the front or back outside door and turn ON the light outside that door. It'll will follow the light to get out.

The animals that are the most famous night see-ers, such as: cats, owls, slow-loris, aye-aye's, geckos and the like, cannot see in 100% absolute darkness but must have low light levels to activate the rods and cones in the back of their eyes. Even on a cloudy night there are enough small light rays invisible to a human but enough for these animals to be able to see.
These animals have an Iris which opens to a larger diameter than a human, allowing the smallest traces of light to enter on very dark nights.
Even bats cannot see in the pure dark but use sound, echolocation, a sort of radar, to get around in the blackness.

dont think they see in darkness, but they have ears that hear, and nose that can smell, example the bat that is blind, it uses ultra sounds like radar, for guidance, and to catch its prey
