Many people sleep with their eyes open (or half open). The reason we DREAM is because we are thinking about something but if your actually seeing something its because your eyes are open.

The visual images that arise in dreams and in imagination ( and hallucinations?) are really not "seeing". It is not known where they come from or how the brain forms them. Perhaps you have had a "Lucid Dream" experience. That is dreaming during which you "know" in your conscious dream state that you are asleep and dreaming. You can look that up in Yahoo! search for more info on it. I can't comment on it because I have never had a lucid dream.

There is a order of shut downs that our body does before we reach sound sleep and if they shut down out of sequence you may experience that.Example sitting in a chair and you start to nod off when the head falls and you jump your muscles relaxed but your reflexes are still on and it startles you.

we see with the brain
when we are asleep and dreaming we are seeing what the brain and subconscious runs with
the optical site of the brain is at the base of the head at the back so when you bang your head you see stars thats because the optical site has had a trauma

it's called a dream. if you can actually see, you are not asleep. if you see someone sleeping with there eyes cracked open, that's just how they sleep.
my brother does that .
his eyes actually move.
