Nancy M. Johnson (1795-1890) (it is not certain where she was from - some say New Jersey, Washington D.C., and even Philadelphia) invented the hand-cranked ice cream freezer (her basic design of the freezer is still used today). Her invention simplified the process of making ice cream. She patented it on September 9, 1843, Patent No. 3254. The invention of this machine marked a revolution in the history of ice cream. From this time on, anyone could make the very best quality ice cream at home.
It was this invention that people started making ice cream with different fruits during the summer months.
When summer was done and the harvest was in farmers would get together for one more time before the winter set in and isolated them from their neighbors for up to six months.
Everyone brought their ice cream makers, with lots of cream, eggs and fruit that was harvested from the farms. On a hot Indian Summer day they all came together to catch up on the happenings and lay the plans for the future. Women made the ice cream, men passed the time talking, and the children got to churn the ice cream crank.
It was a party that would last into the evenings with dancing and feasting, not just ice cream, but many of the fine meats and vegetables from far and wide. Many a farmer would spend the night in a neighbors house because he might have come two or threes days journey to these festivities.

Ice cream (socials) were a way for people to get together and cool off on hot days serving ice cream or other cool treats, long before AC came along. You still hear the term "ice cream socials" but it's just the saying that's carried on through the years.

Mike B; if you have a source for Ice Cream Socialists perhaps you could give it. The New Oxford Review, an orthodox Catholic journal published in the US, promoted that term in the 1980s for their vision of Christian social ethics, or at least one of the editors did.

Just what it sounds like. They serve ice cream and you sit and talk. This is used for initial get togethers at schools and to introduce people to nursing homes and real estate developments.

That's a party that you throw when your freezer brakes down, and you have several gallons of Ice Cream that's going to go bad unless you eat it all real fast.
