Sound waves vibrate through your skull and still hit your ear drums....the new helmets firemen, swat members, and military wear have the 'ear' piece behind the ear on the skull so that they can hear when in loud conditions

Because your skull acts as a hearing drum, so to speak. Thats how Beethoven was able to compose music after his loss of hearing.
