Best book: The Shining (all versions of the movie were not up to par compared to the book.)
Best movie: The Stand. Even par with the book.
These two were my favorites, and I've read a lot of Stephen King.

For some odd reason I've never read any of his books. Everyone in the 80s I hung out with always praised 'The Stand' as being his best book, and from everyone's answers here, I can see that 'The Stand' still stands! :-)
As for movie, I'd have to say my fave is 'Maximum Overdrive', the only one King directed himself. I don't know why he never directed again, cause I really thought he did a great job for a first-time director with no experience. But, 'Maximum Overdrive' has every King has to offer and he delivers it at a pace that puts the pacing of the King mini-series to the point of almost being dull. The remake of 'Max OD' (Trucks) wasn't anywhere near as good as King's own adaption to his short-story. :-) I can't say goodbye without nods to 'Cujo' & 'Pet Semetary' too! Both movies were great!

Best Stephen King book would be Rose Madder or Desperation and the best movie would have to be it.

The Stand was awesome! However, I loved Misery as well, especially because the movie was so much like the book.

Book is either The Stand or Salem's Lot. They both are soooooooo good. I don't really like the movies though. The only one I thought was good was Misery.
