would the country be a better place if we sniffed glue in our lunch breaks and after work and the rest of our leisure time?

Answers so far are saying solvents more harmful but experts had it way lower on the list of 'amount of harm caused by drugs' than alcohol.

The control freaks have moved on from tobacco, obesity, traffic and other green issues, and have now got around to demonising tobacco. I warned the anti-smoking brigade sometime ago that their intolerance will spread, and that this control freak government would eventually get around to trying to stop them drinking. Little sympathy.

I couldn't resist making that little speech, but as far as your question is concerned, unless you go completely over the top, alcohol is not as dangerous as solvents. Alcohol, has been socialised as an activity over many centuries.

Re. your additional details. They are making such spurious comparisons because they want to demonise alcohol for political purposes. It gives them more nannying control over our daily activities. The results of alcohol drinking are well known and predictable. Glue sniffing often has sudden fatal consequences.

If alcohol is taken in sensible amounts, then its not that damaging. The liver recovers much quicker than any other part of the body. Alcohol replaces H2O (water) with OH (alcohol), this means that your dehydrated, and get hangovers (so its best to drink a pint before going to bed *top tip*) .

Glue sniffers are just daft as they can also be addicted to the high, but the brain (which just gets starved of oxygen) cant re-heal effectively, therefore killing more cells than alcohol.

This is why alcohol is legal to those which have fully formed and working livers, whereas solvents aren't.

sniffing glue gets you high by replacing the oxygen your brain needs with something else ( glue) making you temporarily stupid, and in the long run brain damaged. Alcohol makes you temporarily stupid, and in the long run causes liver failure and general deterioration of your body. Not too hard on the brain though. So is it better to be brain damaged or more body damaged?
