Bass and guitar (electric or accoustic) sound completely different.

A bass guitar is longer and usually has 4 strings E, A, D and G (though some can have 5 which would be B). Its neck is longer than the electric or accoustic guitar and its sound is a lower, deeper, somewhat throbbing sound.

Electric guitars have a shorter neck and 5 strings (though they can have 8 or 12 as well). They can make a variety of sounds depending on usage of distortion and wah wah pedals, whammy bars, ect.

Easiest way is that a bass guitar usually has four strings and an electric guitar has six strings. However, if you're far away from the stage and can't see the strings, the electric guitarist is the one probably playing the solo and the bass player is standing back - unless your name is Flea.

Then, there's always the old joke - what do you call a guy who hangs out with musicians? The bass player.
