The main challenges/risks are overcoming political and financial risks. You must deal with new regulations and protect yourself against currency failures. Marketing is a huge challenge also, because regions (even areas within a region) are marketed to differently. There is some guys thing that ranks countries based on degree of indvidualism vs collectivism, uncertainty avoidance vs risk loving, and two others that I dont really remember. If you are from a country that is highly individualistic and try to go into one that is highly collective you will face problems in human resource management.
Infrastructure (mainly transportation and communication) are also major challenges. You need the necessary infrastructure in order to conduct business operations.
These can be overcome via Joint Ventures with local companies to gain access to their distribution channels, and other forms of shared control.
