Why would anyone want to use AVG Anti-Virus when competent independent comparative reviews clearly show it's dismal malware detection rate?

People like free stuff.

But you could make the same argument about anything. Why do people buy Mercedes when their reliability ratings have been horrible in Consumer Reports for years? Why do people buy Cadillac when they are totally unreliable and depreciate like crazy?

People don't always make informed choices when it comes to purchases. They see something they like, and they get it. In the case of AVG they like the fact it is free.

Personally I would rather have AVG than Norton. I think that Norton has become one of the lamest anti-virus programs on the market. The last machine I got for my office ran half the speed with Norton on it than with another leading anti-virus program.

Because most users aren't aware of the difference between a competent independent comparative review and the reviews listed in PC rags. They buy the latest issue of PC Magazine and assume their reviews are unbiased although advertising revenue spent by the vendor clearly plays a role.

As for AVG, I am very aware of it's less than stellar malware detection and would not use it myself. However, many people see that it is free and it has a simple user interface so they assume that it's a good product. For most users, it is sufficient for home use in a non-mission critical environment.

.
Most are missing a few brain cells, it's not a very good AV program & it's not the best free one by far, but some mugs never learn (until it's to late).

Second to P2P programs I would say AVG is responerble for more viruses spreading on the internet than any other program.

What Bill states namely "For most users, it is sufficient for home use in a non-mission critical environment" is totally un-true and it's people like this that don't help the mugs running AVG.
