I see two basic ways to approach this subject, from a humanitarian point of view or from a religious point of view. One might take either or both or neither.
From the humanitarian point of view, we are living so that we can help other people. This should not just be seen as 'saving mother earth for future generations' and throw your soda can in the recycle bin. We are alive every day in order to make this world a better place for everyone alive today. It is an on-going and constant struggle to be where we are at this very moment, and make the best out of it for ourselves and for others.
The religious point of view tends to want us to be here as a reflection of God, to make our lives closer to who God wants us to be. We are fulfilling God's will in our lives by living for God. It can be a bit frustrating in discerning God's will, but there are those who say anyone who is a true believer and follower of God, anything they say or do, within a context of their belief system, is in fact doing God's will.
Then of course there are ego-centric and selfish people who follow the dictum: "He who dies with the most toys wins" That thought makes me crazy because ultimately dead is dead, and nothing we have can go with us.

the very thought that we living "for" creates suffering which humanity experiencing since Adam/ Eve curiosity to know...May be it is a first sin, just to think that we live "for"? Actually we build our living on that concept, locally and globally. But in truth we just simply live Life if you drop all the smart *** meanings collected for centuries..So simple.....With all that mentally "meaningful" crap we live , basically, unhappy life...Happiness becomes a phantom which we chasing. When we reach our "goals" we will be happy... Well...Not quiet, not at all Would happiness be on another end of unhappiness? Think of it a little...If we just live we representing Life itself and we do not have to chase an unreachable phantom, for we are happy already...Choosing to live "for" something or anything we choose unhappiness which is also dual and gives you its happy moments and ongoing philosophical birth contractions without any delivery......starways to nowhere...and that is good , for when we realize that simple truth we will find ourselves now here at instant
