I have always thought of myself as an American, but when I recently went to Europe, many Germans, Brits, and French thought I was of their nationality.

It's probably the way you behaved and acted. A lot of Europeans have the image of Americans being loud, obnoxious, ignorant, fat, and bad dressers. This of course is not true, but unfortunately there's this negative image about us.

Because a true american is a native american. Most people in America are of european descent from british and french colonization centuries ago.

I didn't realize there was a certain look to Americans - especially since many are of European descent.

Probably because you are not overweight. Except for Germans, most Europeans are much thinner than Americans.

If you dress in fashion then they'll think you're European and if you look nice then they'll consider you as an European and that's a good thing.Don't get a shirt that says "I'm an American, don't consider me as an European"

It has a lot to do with how you carry yourself. Also, after you have traveled to many different places, you notice that many stereotypes are not all bad and often true. Many Swedes are blond with light eyes, etc.
Many times when I'm in Germany, I am addressed in German - my grandfather was German.

probably because they are undereducated idiots who think americans are fat and greasy who are loud and walk around with an annoying southern accent in a baseball cap, holding a bag of mcdonalds french fries
