I think you may be able to turn it off by going to your start menu > my computer > control panel > sounds and audio > then scroll down to click on or off the sounds that occur for certain activities you perform, like changing web pages. You may have to fool around with it a bit until you find the right command to click off.

Look in the program events list and find your issue and change the sound.

Ringing in the ears? They have medication for that, that will cut it down to a low roar. If you have DSL, you might have to get hold of the DSL company for a filter on the telephone line.

you can stop it by shutting the sound off.
