Throughout the last trimester of pregnancy, your body is starting to prepare itself for labor, doing everything from "practice contractions" (Braxton Hicks Contractions) to separating the hips to make the birth canal large enough for the baby to come through. However, in order for the baby to continue growing safely and securely, not all of this can be complete before being born, otherwise the child would simply come out without warning!

During labor, the cervix must dialate to at least 9 centimeters (usually the doctor looks for 10cm before proceding to the "pushing" stage), when it normally has an opening the size of pencil lead. Additionally, contractions in the uterus must be strong enough to move the baby into and through the birth canal.

Mother Nature does give a little bit of help through these tough times, however. When a woman's "water" breaks (the amniotic sack rupturing), this provides a good source of lubricant for the baby to slide through in the birth canal, making contractions and pushing more effective. Also, in the final days/weeks of pregnancy, the cervix will become softer than usual, making it stretchy and pliable to the point that it usually is not severely damaged due to childbirth.

Everything inside of you is stretching to make way for this gigantic baby coming out of a body hole 1/16th the baby's size.

To quote Kirstie Alley in Look Who's Talking---"You try squeezing something the size of a watermelon out of an opening the size of a lemon and let me know how you feel after."

Ain't childbirth fun? I'm so looking forward to that magic day myself---in 3 months.

The pain is from your uterus (not the vagina, contrary to apparently popular opinion). The muscles of your uterus are very strong, and when they contract to push the baby through the birth canal, it's painful - like stomach cramps when you're ill, but considerably stronger. Every woman's experience is different, of course, and every person perceives pain differently. There are lots of options these days when it comes to pain control during childbirth, so it's not something to sit around and worry about.

Having a baby was not suppose to hurt. It was suppose to be a beautiful thing. I guess you can probably blame Eve. This is our punishment for her wrong doing. Something like that read the bible.

The pain of childbirth was the curse that God put on women because Eve ate the forbidden fruit

because your body is drastically streches down there, and the baby is "pulling" off from inside your uterus, which is like a bad bad period feeling, it's not just blood shedding its a whole baby! So it really hurts.

Well, partly because you're squeezing a head out of you, and partly fear. We are told it will hurt, and we expect it to. The more we expect something to hurt, the more it will. If you could be completely relaxed during childbirth, it wouldn't hurt so much.

Because your pelvis bones are literally spreading apart for the baby to fit down the birth canal. You uterus is also dilating from like on cm. wide to 10 cm. wide.

Because Eve ate the forbidden fruit and she talked Adam into eating it too. We are being punished for that.
