if you were handling him then he probably bit you because he was scared. if you put your hand in his cage and he bit you then he might have been being territorial.

Lizards never bite for "no reason". More than likely, it was agitated and and felt you were a threat. That is a basic response to a threat if it cannot get away perhaps because you are holding it.

If it was in it's cage and you tried picking it up, it might bite for the same reason. An easy way to pick up a lizard is by holding your hand flat with fingers together as you reach for the lizard. They are less likely to bite something that is larger than a couple of fingers in front of it's face. Ease your hand behind it's head and cup it around the body to pick it up.

A very common error many people make that causes bites is not washing your hands after handling food, then trying to handle a lizard or snake. If you smell like food, there's a very good chance you'll get bitten even from a lizard that's never bitten before. You should always wash your hands before and after handling any reptile. That should be your number one rule of handling them.

Handle lizards slowly and with care. Making fast movements or handling them roughly will agitate them. If you hold them too tight, it will irritate them and they'll struggle more to get loose and be agitated.

Also, some lizards are just not meant to be held. Some are mild-mannered and make great pets for kids, while others are generally hostile and should never be held. Holding a lizard frequently will often help them grow accustomed to being held. If you only get your lizard out on rare occasions, it will not get used to you and will be more agitaged when disturbed. Generally, do NOT hold them for at least a day or two after they've eaten, as this may stress them out and cause them to regurgitate their food or cause problems with digestion.

One thing I ALWAYS do before buying any pet is to do research on it, usually by searching for internet sites and reading books. Learn everything you can about your intended pet BEFORE you buy it.

What does it eat? How do you handle it? What temperature and humidity does it require? What kind of enclosure is best? What substrate to use in the enclosure? What hiding spots are ideal? How much and what kind of light to use? Try to closely simulate it's natural habitat in the enclosure in which you intend to keep it.

I could go on and on here, but I'm not writing a book. I strongly suggest finding one on your particular lizard though.

Lizards are not like cats and dogs. They aren't really meant to be played with. Perhaps he was feeling aggressive, or you startled him. You may have held him the wrong way or possibly squeezed him too hard. They are a lot of reasons why he may have bit you.

I wouldn't be too upset. As much as we try to domesticate them, they are still wild animals at heart.
