I always thought that gangs were just a bunch of criminals that do so cuz it's "cool", but my cousin said that it's more. He wouldn't tell me though because he said he can't explain it. Maybe you can, though...

I used to work the gang division in the LASD. What i noticed is people usually join gangs for many different reasons but most common is because their original family isn't always there for them. They look at each other as brothers, some look up to the elder members as father figures Sum it all up its for love and affection that family members aren't providing.

Well, the Mafia was started in Sicily, to stop the exploitation of working people. It was then carried over to the US and started in New Orleans. So it would seem that gangs started to help protect the oppressed from the oppressors. In society they're are many who feel oppressed so they try to stop it by forming a gang. Not to say that their aren't people who aren't oppressed, but I would say that it is pretty much eradicated.

They use it as a way of identifying themselves. They claim it's like a family. But it isn't anything more then a bunch of punks running around causing trouble and committing crimes and whatnot.

perhaps its the feeling of belonging tio somethign..and someone always having ur back.. a brotherhood...sort of like a frat, but w/ criminal activity...
