For example, when you buy a 32" door, is it 32" from door edge to edge or from edge of casing to the other edge of casing?

If you buy a 32" door, the door will be 32" wide. The opening will have to be larger to accommodate the door frame and hinges.

I just installed two vinyl storm doors, and the opening (casing) needed to be 1" wider than the door you buy to allow for the storm door framework, and integral hinge.
