it's backlash from the years of every source in society (from parents to media to education to religion to culture) telling women that their worth is based on how attractive and desirable they are to a man. it still permeates every aspect of our mainstream society.

your "third world" comment is a perfect example of this.

I am glad you are going third world for your, what was it, next wife? How many have you had? Obviously you are a jerk and can only accept what you think is perfect. Are you afraid you will be looked down upon? Well, too late. I already do. But, to answer your question. I cannot help being who I am. Most women fight on a daily basis to lose or regulate their weight. It is a constant battle. I do not view it as alright to be fat but it is something a lot of people have to live with. You show me the cure for obesity and I will guarantee every over weight person will line up to take it. Do you think we like being "fat"? Do you think we can control it or stop it? I do not know a single person that wants to be obese. It is a condition just like baldness and being a jerk. So, I will forgive you for your condition even though you look down on me for mine.

Because it IS OK. You're focusing a bit too much on the wrong thing---and from your name and way of typing, along with the heavy emphasis on appearance in the question, I'm guessing this is a cultural aspect. I've noticed that about Italian-American men where I live, that they have a hard time getting down to who someone is without first giving them this weird up-and-down look. Appearance is a bit overdone in that culture....and yet they never come out quite right. Something is always "off." And that one thing that is off is the attitude---the whole "Look at me!" thing they have.

Then there are genetic differences (yes Annie, I get what you mean down there but here's the scoop.) We Cherokee women were never stick-thin and tall like Euros because we're another type of people altogether. What you people call fat may be normal for another ethnic or racial group, and not be unhealthy at all.

I am an American lady who weighs about 100 pounds, 5'5". I will never understand why so many American women have deemed "I'm big and healthy, and I LIKE it" as a mantra for themselves. I don't even believe it when they say it it to me. I've counseled too many of these women in weight loss programs, helping them to become slimmer! I think it is easier to say, "I look just fine, and I feel good", than to actually take measures in hand, lose the weight, and actually be healthier. Too much meat on our OWN bones is not healthy. IN my County, the stats say, we have more overweight females than in any other County in the state. The ladies, here, are REALLY overweight, for the most part. They are NOT healthy, by any means. Interestingly enough, I have talked to many unmarried men who want to know it I know of anyone who IS thin, and acts ladylke. It is important to a man to have a wife he can be proud of. When one marries a 125 pound lady, and finds that his wife weighs 250 or more within a year or less, and HE keeps the same weight, it is a shock!. I see this all the time. The women, often, look as though they are the mother of the man. When I hear the ladies tell their husbands that the weight came BECAUSE they had children, I just cringe. I had children, too. I was careful NOT to gain more weight than I needed to gain to have a healthy baby, each time. I know men can be proud of a wife who is a great mother, a worker, a professional, a good cook, a great entertainer for his friends and co-workers. Still, a man can, also,be embarrased with a wife or girlfriend who is just way over weight for her height and bone size. This whole movement of "I'm o.k., you're o.k." just does not pertain to a lot of weight gain. It ISN'T healthy by any means, and it causes a LOT of ladies to become depressed. I would even go so far as to say it is the leading cause of depression among females.

Most American women would prefer to be slimmer but often find it difficult to lose weight. Fact: Both men and women worldwide have been getting fatter over the years. As for marrying a third world woman, chances are they will also get fat once you bring them to the US and they begin to follow an American diet. By the way, I take it you must be one slim, handsome hunk of a man to be speaking this way. Hmmm. I assume you have six pack abs and resemble George Clooney.

If we felt that it was okay to be fat then cosmetic surgeons would go out of business. Liposuction is almost as big as breast augmentation. What part of the country do you live in?

No, its not simply OKAY to be fat. No matter what anyone says, being fat is not only UNATTRACTIVE but UNHEALTHY and if you are overweight, dont go around accepting other people's sympathy and words like "its whats on the inside that matters" cause they dont care for you, they are just secretly thanking god its not them. So to all the overweight people, stop complaining and feeling sorry for yourselves....get off the couch, eat healthier, diet, surgery whatever it takes because you are not okay.

As most American women are on some kind of diet, clearly they do not think it's okay to be fat.
