$0.02 - Great article. I read this in High School back in the 70s. It's been 42 years since it was written and the problem has only gotten worse. It appears that the government which sought to solve the problem is now at fault.

So many reasons: having children out of wedlock, fathers not taking responsibility, drugs, less than exceptional education , and no hope; not for themselves or from society, are a few reasons. Its the elephant in the room

Well the two explanations that he offered 1. High incaceration rates at the low income level 2. and women being more likely get higher degrees, are both symptoms of the problem not explanations.
read the "Moynihan Report" (as in Senator Patrick Moynihan) he wrote it while working for the department of labor in the 60's.

Not just blacks are low income. Not just blacks are having children out of wedlock. Families are failing because of a lack of good role models within the family.

hmmm lets see what i have...a brand new house, 2 cars, 2 flat screen tvs mounted on the wall, 3 other tvs, new furniture that just arrived today, a ps3 and ps3 games, going to school, an ipod, new clothes that Ive yet to wear that still have tags on them, shoes, shud i keep going...o by the way I'm black looks like were going upwards
